Joanna Toch | Barrister

Joanna Toch - ShenSmith BarristersYear of Call: 1988

Joanna is a practising family law barrister who has been continuously working as a family lawyer for over 22 years, most of that time in barristers’ chambers but also within solicitors’ firms.

She appears at all levels of court both instructed by solicitors and by the public direct.

During this time Joanna has regularly taken complex cases from beginning to end and dealt with what happens afterwards when orders are not followed.

She has dealt with every aspect of the law, acting in thousands of cases including contested divorces, uncontested divorces, whether there was ever a marriage, “common law” marriage disputes, property claims, money claims when parties divorce or separate, money claims for children, child abduction, care proceedings, external and internal relocation disputes, cases where contact is denied, where arrangements are not agreed and disputes about who a child should live with, fact finding hearings on domestic violence and injunctions.

Some of these cases are in the law reports, the vast majority go unreported.
She has also drafted the letters and documents needed to make the right things happen.

Joanna formerly taught trainee barristers in the skills of advocacy, ethics, law and procedure. She set and marked exams for the Bar Council. Joanna advised at the Croydon “one stop shop” for victims of domestic violence, the first in the country.

Joanna rowed for Great Britain in two Olympic Games and eight World Championships and has a silver medal in the lightweight fours event.

Joanna’s mission is to bring family law to the public in the way they need it, she is passionate in her belief that those that find themselves with a family law problem deserve respect, knowledge and even-handed treatment and to know all their options from the outset so that they are the ones that make the choices.
